Anxiety & Panic

At any one time in the UK 1 in 7 people are suffering from stress or anxiety. Anxiety is a normal reaction which everyone feels from time to time. Anxiety & panic are normal and natural reactions which everyone feels from time to time. We are biologically programmed to protect ourselves and one of the ways we do that is through the “fight or flight or freeze” reaction. If our brains perceive a threat or danger, it releases adrenaline or cortisol to prepare us to run away, fight or freeze. Our hearts pump faster, and our body is primed for action. In the right circumstances, this reaction is a live saver and completely appropriate for the situation we find ourselves in. More often, nowadays this system gets activated when there is no physical danger and we are flooded with these uncomfortable feelings with no idea how to utilise or get rid of them.

Anxiety can manifest in different ways for everyone but common physical signs are: butterflies in the stomach, nausea and stomach upsets, chest tightness, dry mouth, faster breathing, restlessness, insomnia, panic attacks, racing heartbeat, shortness of breath and sweating. Common psychological signs include agitation, overthinking, ruminating, irritability, irrational dread, phobias and fears. 

 

There are many different types of anxiety, you could experience anxiety over an upcoming interview or performance (see the section on confidence), you could find that you are feeling anxious frequently for a myriad of different reasons or you may be diagnosed with a more specific anxiety disorder including: Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social anxiety disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Health anxiety or Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Phobias & Fears

With just 3 or 4 sessions you can overcome even a life long phobia

Are you afraid of flying? Uncomfortable in confined places? Afraid of wasps? Maybe you break out in a cold swear at the thought of public speaking? Maybe you have a fear of heights? medical procedures? public transport or water? No matter what it is, hypnotherapy can be very effective in helping you to get rid of the phobic response so you can start to live your life without fear.

We can learn to be afraid of a myriad of things and situations. Some of these fears are learned responses from childhood, some seem to have come out of nowhere and you have no idea how they started or when.

Regardless of the reason for the phobia a combination of Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Desensitisation training can be used to get rid of the phobic response.

 
Health & Wellbeing

IBS

IBS is one of the most common disorders of the digestive system and it has been estimated that it effects one third of a all people in the UK to some extent. It is characterised by a collection of symptoms affecting the small or large bowel, which can cause pain and discomfort. The exact causes are unknown and it has been suggested there is a mind-body / stress link with IBS.

Hypnotherapy could help IBS in the following ways:

  • Helping you to relax and easing the symptoms if they are triggered by stress.

  • Teaching you powerful creative visualisation techniques to relieve your symptoms.

  • Programming in a new, positive reaction to stress triggers.

Insomnia

Insomnia and sleep problems tend to start in isolation but can soon develop into habits that are hard to break. If you experience regular sleep problems, it's often the result of of your "programme for sleep" in your unconscious mind being distorted in some way. Using Cognitive Hypnotherapy I can help you to use both your conscious and your unconscious mind to restore your natural sleep cycle. Sessions are tailored to individual need but could include:

  • Sleep restriction therapy

  • Relaxation training

  • Cognitive restructuring

  • Sleep hygiene

At the end of your first session you will be given a CD that you can listen to as often as needed. This will reinforce what you have covered in your session and will help you to re-establish your natural cycle of deep, restful sleep.

Weight Management

The premise of weight management sessions is that the key to successful and long-term weight loss is to change your mental programming and relationship with food. The solutions are different with everyone, but areas I would typically focus on include:

Recognising and controlling your response to hunger

Boosting your self-esteem and body confidence

Increasing your motivation to change

Increasing motivation to exercise and boosting metabolism

Stopping emotional eating and stress management

Dealing with compulsive eating and food cravings.

I also offer gastric band hypnosis. This takes place over 2 sessions and costs £150 for the two sessions.

 
Releasing Negative Behaviours & Emotions 

Many of us have negative emotions or behaviours that are holding us back in some way. Perhaps whenever we encounter difficulties we react in the same negative way? Maybe we have some negative beliefs about ourselves that get in the way and hold us back? Maybe we seem to make the same mistakes time and time again? Or perhaps we are so hard on ourselves that nothing we do feels good enough? Sometimes we understand why we feel and behave the way we do but can't seem to change it. Other times we have no idea where these negative thoughts or behaviours come from. Working with you I can help you  to understand how and why your difficulties began and most importantly help you to release them and to develop new positive emotions and behaviours so you can move forward in your life.

We all have issues from the past, but we don't have to let them define who we are now. By accessing the power of your "subconscious" mind you can begin to unlock your potential and remove any blocks or obstacles to change.

Abuse & Trauma
 

It has long been understood that negative childhood experiences and abuse can cause the sufferer problems long after the abuse has ended. Abuse can be sexual, physical or emotional, but the results are often the same: problems with relationships, substance abuse and post traumatic stress disorder, which can plague adult survivors of abuse.

If you were abused as a child then your young mind is likely to have accepted ideas about yourself that are entirely untrue - that you are a "bad" person, for example, or that you are worth less than others, that you need to justify your existence, or be punished. Alternatively, you may have been subject to mental, physical or sexual abuse later in life, the effects can be just as devastating.

A combination of Hypnotherapy / Hypnoanalysis and Parks Inner Child Therapy (PICT) can be used to help you to unlock and release the feelings you no longer need and you can begin to feel free once again. Sometimes this may take a few sessions - but the benefits are worth it.

 
Confidence & Performance

Confidence and Self-Esteem

Increased confidence can help you in all sorts of situations whether that be at home, at work, with friends or with colleagues. Because self-confidence is such a natural and basic resource, lack of self-confidence is often one of the reasons for lots of other problems and difficulties. When you develop more confidence, it will have a positive impact on many areas of your life.

Improved Performance / Test & Exam Performance

Have you ever noticed that there are some brilliant students who do really well all year, but then freeze and don't do as well in exams, tests or performances? There are others who don't do as well in normal situations but who seem to have the knack of performing well when they are under pressure. In a similar vein, you may be a a confident driver in lessons who falls apart in test conditions. So what is the trick? What makes a difference?

The difference is that our minds filter information about the exam, test or performance differently. People who do well in these situations seem to be able to access an internal state which helps them to achieve what they are capable of.

  • Giving you techniques to overcome exam/test nerves, anxiety, panic and pressure.

  • Developing positive beliefs and motivation for study and revision.
